Product Description
The Allied push up the boot of Italy had come to a dramatic halt outside the small Italian town of Cassino. Looming above the battlefield stood a large Benedictine monastery, which commanded the approach up the Liri Valley toward Rome. Over eight months the Allied and German armies attacked and counterattacked each other with heavy losses and little gain. Even with the landing at Anzio, where the Germans responded with a ferocious assault in a bloody but unsuccessful counterattack, little headway was made. The Allies amassed what reserves they could for a final attempt to break the deadlock at Cassino, connect with the bridgehead at Anzio, and claim the prize of Rome. The Road to Rome was long and hard, but many more battles would eventually lead beyond Rome to the very borders of the German Reich.

Liberation of Italy
I've been looking forward to this for some time, having a family connection to the fighting. Including the Forces lists for LW and Operation Husky is extremely valuable. Yet somehow I came away disappointed. Perhaps because the majority of builds are rather bland. Yes, looted Italians and Goums are fun, but overall I wasn't excited. I expect to see Rangers and Special Forces, but the strike me as more of the same, where I'll proxy older units rather than painting new ones. Your mileage may vary. The book itself is full of campaign information and the usual perks, but seems to be missing a promised piece on modeling Italian terrain. I have no regrets about purchasing it.
