The baggage trains needed to move an army around in order to engage an enemy force could be enormous and composed of hundreds of carts and wagons, laden with the essentials of campaigning such as powder, shot, food, drink, forage and so on. Although the majority of the baggage were civilian, they were a valuable prize for marauding enemy cavalry, and were often fortified or guarded by matchlock or firelock companies.
