Artillery HQ (Afrika) (GE749)
An important, if somewhat overlooked, arm of the Afrikakorps was its artillery. No attack or defence was complete without the veteran gunners at the ready waiting to lend supporting fire, lay smoke or bombard the enemy to clear the way for the glory grabbing Panzers and Panzergrenadiers.
The Afrikakorps was armed with a variety of excellent artillery pieces.
The standard light field howitzer was the 10.5cm leFH18, a solid conventional design, it proved the reliable workhorse of the German army throughout the war. Other guns to see action in the desert were the 7.5cm Geb36 mountain gun with the 164 Afrikadivision and the 7.62 FK36(r) with the 90 Afrikadivision.
A few large calibre guns and howitzers were also used, a mix of German and Italian types. The British 25pdr also managed to make its way into the batteries of the Afrikakorps arsenal.
They plotted the fire, worked out fire plans and surveyed the battery sites. These men make up the batteries’ staff.
Controlling the fire of these mighty batteries were teams of dedicated skilled professional artillery officers and men.
